* Payment of the full entry fee for Juveniles, Juniors and Students is deferred. £10 is payable on admission, the remaining £20 on progression to Ordinary Member.

The Annual Fees entitle members to the Club facilities and obtain a National Handicap. For those wishing to play golf on the course, additional Greenfees are payable separately to Fife Golf Trust.

Membership Information

The background

On 5 February 1958 a group of interested people met to discuss the formation of a golf club for the new town of Glenrothes. This was duly formed and golf competitions were played on various golf courses in Fife as there were no golf courses in the town at that time.

Meetings were held with the Glenrothes Development Corporation and the Glenrothes District Council and after much lobbying, construction of the course and clubhouse commenced in 1964/65.

The golf course was opened for play in July 1967 for three months. The occasion being marked by a captain vs. vice-captain match on Saturday 15 July 1967.

The official opening of the course took place on Saturday 29 June 1968. After opening, the course was administered by Glenrothes District Council until with re-organisation of local government in 1974, Kirkcaldy District Council assumed responsibility.

Glenrothes Golf Club leased the clubhouse from the local authority with playing rights on the course. The clubhouse was extended in 1981, with the addition of a second lounge and in 1994 an extensive refurbishment of the upstairs area was carried out. On 8 April 1996 the members approved the purchase of the clubhouse, site of the extension and the steward’s house from the Kirkcaldy District Council. The purchase was completed on 16 October 1996.

The golf course

Glenrothes Golf Course is an 18 hole course, 5984 metres long (6444 yards), par 71. The course occupies a prominent position on the high ground to the west of Glenrothes. The highest point of the course is the top of Goatmilk hill at 561 ft above sea level. The lowest point is the ditch on the 18th fairway at 360ft. A difference of 201ft. The 18th fairway rises 53ft from the ditch to the green.

The course is administered by Fife Golf Trust, being open to members of the public on a “pay and play” basis with concessionary charges for retired persons, students and unemployed people. For those who play regularly, such as the club members, an annual season ticket is available.

The golf club

Although not owning the course, the club has playing rights which allows it to organise many competitions during the golf season.

The club operates within a formal constitution and is managed by a committee comprising captain, vice-captain, honorary treasurer and honorary secretary (the office-bearers) and nine other members.

The amenities of Glenrothes Golf Club are available to members and visitors and adults and juveniles who live in the Glenrothes district are given priority at times when a waiting list for membership is in operation. There are ladies, senior and junior sections within the club. All adult members of the club are ordinary members. Equal membership was granted to women members in February 1990.

Current membership is approximately 400.

The club subscription is agreed by the members at the AGM. Juniors and Juveniles pay a reduced subscription. The senior rate applies to persons over 65 who have been members of the club for five years. New members pay a joining fee which is reviewed annually by the management committee. 2016 subscriptions are £130.00 for adults and the joining fee is £30:00.

When the decision to impose a membership levy of £30 on every member of the golf club was made to help finance the purchase, a special arrangement was made for juniors and youths who pay £10, the balance of £20 becoming due when they become ordinary members at the age of 18. The levy is a one off payment for all existing club members, in perpetuity and from 1 April 1997 the membership levy will become part of the joining fee for new members.

As well as a very full programme of golf competitions in the summer, the club has a busy social diary' during the winter months.

Glenrothes Golf Course was described in a STRI report as a ‘hidden gem’ and provides an enjoyable test for golf players of all ability.
